JCSC News: Cyber Law consultation, upcoming events, and the Digital Jersey TechAwards
If you’re curious about what the draft Cyber Law contains and how it will affect you and your organisation, read on to find out details of when the briefings are happening.
Introduction from Matt Palmer, JCSC Director
Dear reader,
After our first newsletter in a few months in January, you’ll notice we’re back to our regularly-scheduled programming! This is in large part thanks to our Communications and Engagement officer, Carla Jardim, who is also busy planning an exciting and informative series of events, from law consultations to Awareness Month 2024. Watch this space!
As I mentioned in the last newsletter, we now have our full team in place. The timing could not have been better, because the last month has been incredibly busy. As well as dealing with our usual work, we’re organising several events, and supporting our newly-appointed Ministers as they take on their new roles. I think it’s fair to say we’re putting our new team members through their paces.
A few weeks ago, we welcomed Deputy Moz Scott (Assistant Minister for Sustainable Economic Development), to our Operations Centre. She now has oversight of cyber, and has a real interest in what we are seeking to achieve for the Island.
As well as introducing her to the team and showing how we identify technology vulnerabilities and work with local organisations to resolve them, I was able update her on the progress and provisions in the draft Cyber Security (Jersey) Law.
Speaking of the Law, I am very pleased to say that the Government of Jersey will be consulting on the Law from next week. We’ll be supporting them by holding briefings to offer more context and background.
If you’re curious about what the draft Cyber Law contains and how it will affect you and your organisation, read on to find out details of when the briefings are happening.
As ever, please do feel free to share this newsletter (and our events) with anyone you think would find it useful.
Matt
After months of work with colleagues across sectors and in Government, in March, you can share your views on on the draft Cyber Security (Jersey) Law.
If it is approved by the States Assembly later this year, the Law will establish JCSC as an independent organisation, and define our remit and function.
The consultation on draft Law will run between Monday 4 and Sunday 17 March.
You can take part by submitting your comments directly via the Government of Jersey website. (Please note, the consultation web page will be live from 4 March.)
You can also attend a briefing session, either in person at our office at 1 Seaton Place, or online via Microsoft Teams:
Operators of Critical National Infrastructure (CNI): Wednesday 6 March, 12pm – 1.30pm
Operators of Essential Services: Friday 8 March, 8am – 9am
Members of the Public: Thursday 7 March, 5pm – 6.30pm, and Friday 8 March 12pm – 1.30pm.
Upcoming events
International Women’s Day Lunch: Thursday 7 March
We’re inviting all women who work in cyber (and the people who support them) to join us for an early International Women’s Day Lunch on Thursday 7 March.
The theme for International Women's Day 2024 is Invest in women: Accelerate progress.
To celebrate, we’ve worked with Soteria Communications to invite three outstanding women in cyber to join this lunchtime session.
We’ll be joined by:
Chihiro Sasaki, Deputy Chief Operations Officer at Nihon Cyber Defence
Betsy Amy-Vogt, Security Analyst at JT Global
Heather-Anne Hubbell, Chief Executive Officer at Phundex Limited
They’ll talk to us about their individual career paths to date, the practical and financial meaning of investing in women in cyber, and the steps we can take advocate for more investment.
This event is kindly supported by PlainSail, and is free of charge to attend. However, spaces are limited so make sure you reserve your place.
Mini Cyber and Data Conference: Wednesday 20 March
Join us and our colleagues at Jersey Office of the Information Commissioner (JOIC) for a half-day conference on data protection and cyber security.
While these two areas are closely linked, we often see data protection and cyber security colleagues working separately.
This half day conference aims to bring these groups together to discuss how cyber security and data protection interact, including how they are - or should be - regulated.
Sessions will include:
a Q&A sessions with the Information Commissioner for Jersey (Paul Vane), and the Director of the Jersey Cyber Security Centre (Matt Palmer)
an interactive workshop
an optional networking session, sponsored by the Islands Data Governance Forum (IDGF)

Jersey Tech Awards shortlisting
We’re pleased to announce that we’ve been shortlisted for the Cyber Security category for the 6th Jersey Tech Awards.
We’ve been nominated for our partnership work with Soteria Communications and the Channel Islands Information Security Forum (CIISF) for our work on Cyber Security Awareness Month.
Having a month dedicated to Cyber Security Awareness month is an excellent way of focusing discussion on this issue, but it’s a huge undertaking to deliver these events. Together, we organised more than 20 events across the month for over 400 attendees.
You can now find videos of the conference talks and thoughts from attendees over on our youtube channel - if you use youtube you can also subscribe to be notified when we post something new.
A huge thanks to Soteria Communications and CIISF for their work - we’ll look forward to celebrating our nomination at the event, which will take place on Friday 26 April.
Tickets are still available for the event: you can book through Digital Jersey.
