CERT.JE - Neart Le Chéile: Strength Together

Dear all, I am just back from Dublin after 6 intense days of learning from some of the best brains in cyber and incident response at FIRSTCON22. 1,000 attendees from national and corporate cyber defence teams, with a series of hands-on workshops and presentations from both real world experience and original research. Some of the topics are confidential, but I’ll look to share some of what I’ve learned and how we will be applying it over the coming weeks.I met many other CERTs / CSIRTs from countries around the world who we will work with as we develop CERT.JE.Other countries are at different stages on the same journey, so lots of good practice to learn from that will help us on ours. The theme of the conference gives us the key to developing cyber in Jersey -"Strength Together", or in Irish "Neart Le Chéile".We don’t need to reinvent the wheel on the services we provide, and we don’t need to do what the U.K. or others will do on our behalf. We just need to apply lessons learned by others to deliver the right capability to meet Jersey's needs, and of course be willing to share and help others along the way.Regards,Matt

At the United Nations General Assembly last year governmental experts spoke about advancing responsible state behaviour in cyberspace in the context of international security - with this great quote 👆

For those of you not following CERT.JE's social media pages.. there are actions you could take right now to prepare, protect and defend Jersey from cyber threats 👇

Are you a cyber security professional?

To raise awareness of the exciting careers possible in cyber security we need video content that can be used repeatedly in schools. The first batch will be a series of short videos to be played in either computing and career lessons or assemblies.

Please help and send us a short clip of yourself so that we can show as many varied careers in our industry as possible.

The minimum to include is:

  • What do you do (day to day tasks)

  • Why you like it

  • Any qualifications (if needed)

  • Skills that make a difference

  • What subjects you/your team enjoyed (the more diverse the better)

  • Next steps to get started on their journey

Try to make the video short and not just sat at your desk. Multiple short videos can be used if you have lots to say.

To upload a video, please place it in this folder: Cyber Security Video Uploads

Upcoming Events

Local: Launch of the new Channel Island Data Protection Forum with the Channel Islands Information Security Forum - 6th July 2022

The new Channel Island Data Protection Forum is launching and will sit as a sub Committee under the current CIISF, due to the long held opinion that the line between cyber security and data protection has been crossing over and merging. This event, hosted at the Aero club, will give members a chance to give feedback and network, with refreshments provided.

This event by Appleby at the Santander Work Cafe will focus on data breaches and cyber-attacks, featuring CERT.JE's very own Matt Palmer.

Whilst this session was initially designed for Appleby's existing In House Counsel Network, they feel it would also be particularly relevant for Directors and Senior Managers responsible for managing business risk.

Online: How to Recover from Ransomware with JT & Ekco - 12th July 2022

JT Global have partnered with Ekco for an educational webinar looking at the profile of ransomware attack, design flaws in legacy backup architecture and the steps you can take to not only prevent an attack, but to minimise the business impact if you are targeted.

Looking ahead: It's cyber security awareness month in October, and CERT.JE are working on a catalogue of events alongside local partners - details to follow but for now SAVE THE DATE - 4th October for the Headline Conference.

Tool of the month

"Cyber security is central to an organisation’s health and resilience, which means it’s the Board’s responsibility."

For board members looking for guidance, this NCSC toolkit can help.

Cyber Vacancies

Many people have told us there are not many cyber security roles in Jersey, or that it is difficult to find new team members, so we’re sharing the opportunities we are aware of below…

(Please note that sharing is not endorsement).

The Department for the Economy is looking to recruit a Head of Digital Economy who will provide tactical leadership of a team focussing on developing policies relating to digital, telecoms, data protection, cyber security and broadcasting, providing expert advice to the Group Director Economy, Minister(s) and senior government officials.

This is a senior role that involves leading the development and implementation of policies and legislation aimed at enhancing the digital and telecoms provision for Islanders and businesses.

If you’d like to share local resources, jobs or events related to cyber security please do let us know via email to [email protected].
